Aha! I didn't realize before that Annay's "Looking for a Home" story picks up from here, until I saw the link in comments. Hector's suggestion that Annay listen to who the kids are and what they like was meaningful... but more so now that we know more about the kids and Jenny's family.
By the way, I was going to post this on Annay's blog, but I could not figure out how to do it.

Wonderful story! I have a question thought about the end, when Hector said "next time it would be my turn to show him some hospitality." Why did he say that? Was it so he wouldn't have to eat off the plates next time? Or because it is the polite courtesy to say? Or because he is trying to keep sort of a zen balance in his obligations to others (repay a favor in kind)? In this case, it seems that the favor was in the receiving, and that is enough, without trying to "even the balance".
I love this story because this family is taking joy in sharing what little they had, and Hector realized it. I wonder if they knew how hard it was for him to see that they didn't wash the dishes.

I wrote this story based on the sermon I heard on September 20, 2009. The text for the Sermon was Mark 1:9-20.

I think the main take aways for me were that God has a new reality to show us, and that Jesus is on the move.

Heaven opened and God said, "This is my son who I love and in whom I am well pleased." God gave Jesus that encouragement before he was tempted in the wilderness, not as a reward for having passed the test. God is reveling new things to us.

Jesus is on the move. We need to keep our eyes open. We need to be ready to follow when he calls. We need to turn towards where he is leading. We need to believe that he is leading. We need to follow.

We also talked about going out into our city to where God's good news needs to be heard.

That's a good question. I don't know if I would say I've every heard God say words to me, but there have been times where I know he has been leading me - urging me. There have been several times these last two years that I can remember.

Once was when the Van Buskirk children died in a fire. A friend of a friend asked me if I could set u a web site for them. At first I didn't want to, but then I remembered how importation it was for me to get up a site quickly for Nigel. So I said yes and put it together.

A few days later I heard about when the memorial service was going to be. It had only been three months since Nigel's. Going to it was not something I wanted to go - I've only been to five or six in my whole life and I was still dealing with my own loss.

But there was never any question in my mind. Going was something I knew I just had to do. I went and it was hard - I cried. Afterwards they had a private reception for the family. Again I knew that I need to go, even though I wasn't invited.

I managed to get in and was able to talk to the parents. It meant so much to them that I came. They were thankful that I had done the website, but they were truly touched because I came to the service.

I spent some time talking to the father about what I had learned about grief. I also was able to talk to the cousin who had accidentally started the fire that killed the three children.

I don't know if my words helped them. I trust they did and that God was the one that was picking my words for me, because I really didn't know what to say.

So did I heard God's voice. I don't know, but I felt God's presence and direction.

Cindy my wife has visions, which is what I used in this story. Maybe if we ask her she'll add a comment about how God speaks to her.

This was a wake up call to me. It reminded me of how important prayer and faith is in my walk with God. I don't think I've ever heard God actually "speak" to me though. Does that really happen to people?
