The words of Anik
It’s almost Time. I caught a rabbit today. Helgon helped me skin it. She also helped me turn its stomach into a water skin. As soon as it is finished curing, I’ll be ready to go on my vision quest.
I can’t wait to be an adult. Then I’ll be able to compete for Helgon. I think she likes me. That’s why she hasn’t started looking for a mate yet.
I have to admit that I am a little nervous. I’ve never been away from my mother before. In a couple of weeks I’m going to go off into the woods. When I come back, I’ll move in with the young men.
I’ve heard some of the men talking about when they went on their vision quests. They make it sound very scary, but I think that is mostly to make others think they are brave. One of them told of how he fought a lion. Another had a story about a caravan of men. He killed three of them and took their woman as a slave. I wonder which I would rather meet in the woods?
In any case, I have my knife that I made from a bear’s leg bone. I think it’s sturdy and today with the rabbit, I proved it’s sharp. Between that and my strength, I should be able to handle what ever I come across.
I hear the men fighting outside, so I should run and watch them. In a few more weeks I get to join in the fighting, too.
